Knitting Yesterday …
2012
Yesterday I received an email from Laura Burton, the PR Coordinator at the in Topeka Kansas telling me about a new Knitting program that they have set up to support victims of domestic violence. According to the website, “We are asking community members to knit or crochet 6 inch by 6 inch straight-edged squares including the color purple to be put together into a blanket of support, hope and strength for survivors. The blanket will be displayed in public to raise awareness of domestic violence and at the YWCA Battered Women Task Force shelter to comfort survivors.” According to Linda, “This blanket is similar in purpose to a prayer shawl, with all of the hope and strength of the creators being passed on to survivors and their concerns expressed to people in positions of power. I think it will be a powerful symbol.” If you have time to knit one or two small squares before the end of September, it’s a worthwhile investment of your time and energy. .
